A first walk in Sultanahmet: square, mosque and cistern

Get to know the Historic Peninsula through a compact walk that leaves room to pause.

Approach Sultanahmet as a layered public space rather than a checklist. Begin in Sultanahmet Square, the open area of the former Hippodrome, and look for the Obelisk, Serpent Column and German Fountain. Go Türkiye describes the site as a venue for Byzantine chariot races and ceremonies.

Walk from the square to the Blue Mosque and then Hagia Sophia. Their architecture reflects different periods and changing uses of the city. Hagia Sophia is now a mosque; respect worship areas and follow current visitor arrangements. You can finish at the Basilica Cistern: its official site gives an address in Sultanahmet, Fatih. Opening arrangements can change, so check the venue's own site before setting out. There is plenty to take in here. Pausing to notice the details in each place can make the walk more rewarding than rushing from one photograph to the next.
