Karaköy to Galata: a walk through the uphill lanes
Connect the waterfront, historic commercial buildings, stairways and tower surroundings on a climb from Karaköy.
Build your Karaköy walk from the waterfront uphill. Go Türkiye's suggested route starts at the Karaköy tram stop, then passes Minerva Han, Voyvoda Street and SALT Galata before the Kamondo Steps lead toward Galata Tower. The tower's official website says the foundations of today's tower were laid in 1348 during the Genoese period.
This is not a flat route: expect narrow lanes and slopes. Wear comfortable shoes and set a pace that leaves time to look around. If you plan to enter SALT Galata or the tower, check each institution's own visitor information; this guide does not promise opening hours or ticket conditions. You can descend toward the Karaköy waterfront to finish, or extend the walk toward İstanbul Modern if you have energy. The appeal is not limited to one landmark: it comes from seeing traces of different periods share the same street landscape.
